When floodwater rose across Kumarakom in Kottayam district, CAMP's founders and directors, Venkat Kiran and Dinesh Sarella, travelled down to help directly — carrying essential supplies for families whose homes had been swallowed by the backwaters.
Several homes in the area were left waterlogged, some up to the doorframe, cutting residents off from dry food, clean water, and basic supplies. The team worked with the local community and the ABM Govt. U.P. School in Kumarakom — which had opened its doors as a relief distribution point — to get rice, groceries, and daily essentials into the hands of affected families, including several elderly residents who had nowhere else to turn.
This work sits squarely within CAMP's Disaster Rescue & Relief program: when climate-driven disasters hit the communities we already work with, we respond directly, and feed what we learn on the ground back into how we help those communities prepare for the next one.
